What is Client Interviewing?

The Client Interviewing Competition is a simulation of an initial interview conducted between a practitioner and a potential client. It was derived from the traditional practice of mooting in the United States approximately 20 years ago. However it has now evolved into its own competition, using a completely different skill set to that of a moot.

Why should you compete?

Regardless of whether a student wishes to practise law after graduation, client interviewing is a fundamental skill that can be applied in many different workplaces. As for aspiring lawyers, the ability to conduct an effective interview is one of the most important day to day skills a lawyer must possess.

Whereas mooting is an exercise in advocacy that only occurs when practitioners stand up in court, interviewing is a skill that is used daily by all practitioners regardless of their area of practice. Therefore developing these skills early through participating in this competition will give competitors an advantage in the long term.

Winners of the competition will be sent as official delegates of Flinders University to compete in the national Client Interviewing Competition held at the Australian Law Students’ Association conference annually.
